Here the credit must go to Mazza for his editing skills. I shot this in 4K 50P and about 5110K for a cooler look with SteadyShot switched off, on an FX9.
This wasn’t an easy topic as we had to take care of who and where we shot.
I should also add, Faz and Pastor Lorraine - what great people they are and a privilege to have met them.
Shot on an FX9 with both Sony Prime and Zoom lenses. Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame auctioned off part of his guitar collection. It was a treat to meet him and see so many of the instruments he played to create all that timeless music.
This was for a story on how historic buildings are failing to cope in extreme weather.
This was all shot on a Sony PXW z750 and mostly shot by the superb staff cameraman in the London office. My part was filming at Blickling Estate, where Anne Boleyn grew up.
The image below right is taken in an old mine in Camborne which is preparing to reopen in order to mine the large deposits of Lithium. I shot on the
Sony PXW Z750 and for the aerials
I used a Mini 3 Pro.
Datchet Golf Club wanted a short video highlighting its lovely grounds and location. The opportunity to film arose just after a dry period so some of the fairways weren’t at their best but having waited so long we took the opportunity to fly and film. This clip was over a year in the making, delayed last year, again, due to the lack of rain.
Filmed on a DJI Mini 3 Pro and edited on Davinci Resolve.
In the 11 years I’ve been back in London, one of my favourite people to interview is the humorous, articulate and estimable historian Robert Lacey.
Here I operated the ‘B’ cam alongside a great team of which I am honoured to be included.
This is for a Royal documentary which is still in the making so my comments must remain limited.
‘Immersive Bars’ was the subject of this piece. Shot in two locations here in London: The Avora Bar & Lifesized Monopoly. The photo is of us in the Avora and the dual-base chip of the FX9 showed it’s excellence in low-light conditions. Included in the camera line-up were 2 GoPros and an A7 III on the new Ronin RS 3 gimbal (a good but heavy bit of kit).
A story on the Gender Recognition Certificate in Scotland and its effects. Shot in Newcastle and Edinburgh. Politics aside it was a very interesting shoot. Shot on an FX9.
“5 Streets” is filmed in towns and cities around the world. This episode covers The Bishops Avenue, Leake Street, Regent’s Canal, IFS Cloud Cable Car, Regent’s Street. Harald, the director gave me the freedom to use a drone extensively and combined with the FX9 works well.
‘The Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary’ - We shot the annual Tar Barrel event in Ottery St Mary, Devon on an FX9 and used a Mini 3 Pro for the aerials.
This was about a local custom where the youngest participants are 7 years old and carry a flaming barrel before passing it on. This continues until the barrel is too hot and burnt to hold. To take part one must be born in Ottery, have started at the age of 7 and never missed a year. Truly a spectacle!
Broadcast in February 2023 this was a fascinating in-depth look at those around Putin, who they are, their histories and their wealth. My contribution was that shot in London and used an FX9, FX6 and a set of Sigma Art Prime lenses.
A story about house prices and how locals in Whitby are being priced out by the rise in holiday lets and second homes. Shot on an FX9 and a DJI Mini 2 for which we thankfully had perfect weather.
This is the story of how a business monitoring sports for corruption helped a footballer, Leigh Nicol, bring to justice a hacker who posted intimate photos of her online. Shot using an FX9 and Sony A7 III. Stabilisation was with a Ronin 2.
For Deutsche Welle’s new car program ‘REV’ we shot a Lunaz RR Phantom on an FX9 and Inspire 2. Sadly it was a windy and wet day but thanks to the great staff at Lunaz we captured what we needed to. The beautiful blue XK seen in some shots is the one now in Florida and hopefully being enjoyed by Brooklyn Beckham.
This was for a film for an ad agency’s website showing 4 employees in different cities where they have offices. Here I shot the London scenes on an FS7 with Zeiss CP lenses.
With thanks to Ion Films for this shoot about Merlin Sheldrake, a biologist who has written a book on funghi. Similarly to Jethro in the story below, he is articulate and genuinely interesting. Shot on an FS7 and at a time of year when sadly, not many mushrooms are growing so we dashed onto Hampstead Heath where he knew we would find something.
Again thanks to Ion Films for booking me for this shoot with Jethro Crabb, a former artist at Madame Tussauds and modeller of some of the Spitting Image puppets. He was commissioned to sculpt a bust of the incoming US President Biden for the National Presidential Wax Museum.
Brexit from the perspective of a haulier based in Kent. We also flew the drone for some aerial shots of the new customs clearance terminal near Ashford. It was windy but we managed the footage needed.
A piece on two farmer’s views on Brexit with regards their businesses and how they see the future.
These 2 films were shot entirely with a drone which were done for the landowners who kindly allowed me to practice flying for my PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operation).
The farm, primarily for organic beef, harvested it’s first organically grown crop of quinoa that summer.
NB: These are all my first efforts at editing - the goal being to show what is currently going on at the farm for the owners unable to travel due to the pandemic.
Shot on a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom in glorious weather as a thank you to the kind couple who let me use a field as a take off & landing site for another shoot.
Out and about again. This time in Dorset to film beavers and how they can help against flooding. Shot on a PDW 700 1080 50i. Click below to watch.
Frome - the happiest town in the UK? After 2 days filming there, it certainly seems so. Shot on a PDW 700.Click below to watch.
Stunning commercial properties in London such as The Shard and the old Bank of Westminster. Some of which are now empty as businesses are working from home. Shot on a PDW 700. Click below to watch.
An 8 day trip for a 2 day job. My business visa arrived (thank God!) the day before departure. This photo was taken at the end of the first day, finishing up at Darling Harbour. Everything we shot was on the 5D which was interesting but hands up anyone who likes HDMI... Me neither.
Still, thanks to Marc@Digi Hire, I had a well set-up shoulder rig which allowed me to get the look we wanted.
We also had our own ‘making of’ cameraman there for accompaniment.
Interesting job as the divers jumped from the bright sunlight into the ‘cenote’ - for us cameramen it meant 4 stops difference, plus tweaking the focus. A challenge shooting on HD!
This time no octocopter, but a 17m crane with a 3 axis remote-head which gave a terrific feeling of the dizzying height and space.
Was hot, hard word and great fun. Am v. much looking forward to working with this lot again in Athens.
Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series first stop - Easter Island. Tower height: 27m. It’s a 3 second jump. And they hit the water feet first at approx 100 Km/h (60mph). 4 cameras (XD cam), a drone (octocopter) and a Phantom (highspeed camera).
Was a wonderful experience working with very talented cameramen, and a great team.
When the Tsunami hit Japan, we got the warning that it was on it’s way to us. We were all nervous about what to expect, so we trekked off up the volcano. Thankfully nothing happened. The next day the divers returned to practise, and so the tournament jumped off to a great start!
Corporate film for the XXX Lutz Group. We shot a total of 16 days in 14 locations over a period of 11 months and a big ‘well done’ to all who took part!
We were a team of 3 mates and working with friends is always fun, and the Lutz guys.... say no more!
All was shot on the XD Cam in HD 1080 50i and in the photo here we shot at night to avoid unwanted disturbances in the form of announcements etc. Night shoots are always interesting as the working atmosphere is different: Relaxed, and the mind is more focused.
Here we spent a week documenting for Laureus Sports Foundation the Mathare Youth Sports Association, and their success stories in the slum where around a half million people live.
An eye-opening and fascinating time.
This was an interesting shoot with Heather Mills. At the closing of her divorce proceedings, the judge is reported to have said she has an ‘elastic way with the truth’. Maybe, but we all found her interesting, fun and most beguiling! Shot for a northern irish tv chat show.
Here, two weeks shooting the ‘making of’ for a feature film called Themba. Starting out in the Eastern Cape, and then moving to Cape Town. The fun job was crowned when Egon, the DoP asked if I would like to stay on in the camera department for the rest of the shoot: What a question: OF COURSE! And what a privilege too.
So life in Munich was put on hold and I joined the film set. Long, long days, fun times and learned a lot and ended up with a cameo role as Jens Lehmann!
Here we shot a puppet theatre for a travel agency. For the flying scene we simulated flight (balanced on someones’ chest) by being able to move the fuselage (deftly being moved by Danny). The prop was attached to a cordless drill on ‘slow’.
We spent 2 weeks documenting the arrival and settling-in of this young girl on an exchange program from Cologne to Santa Cruz.
Here we were being told about her pony ride on the dunes near Challapata, west of Santa Cruz.
We were a great team, and spent a day shooting the two boys using a tin can telephone for a film celebrating 75 years of Rohde & Schwarz, an international electronics company.
Location was the Oskar-von-Miller high-school playground, and luckily we had a glorious autumn day.
Shoot was the ‘making of’ for the film Resident Evil Extinction, and here is Randi, one of the desert zombies having escaped after 3 hours in the make-up trailer. Shooting was in the desert of Baja California, Mexico. The powder fine sand and blistering heat was challenging for all.
At lunch I sat next to ‘Ice Hockey’. Not easy concentrating on your food sitting next to an enormous bodybuilding Zombie in full costume..
Here we shot on the Panasonic Varicam and spent 4 days in both the red Bull hangars 7 & 8 at Salzburg Airport.
Here Sigi Angerer, the head pilot, was being interviewed in front of B-25 Mitchell. It was a fascinating shoot as I I love flying and there is a truly special team working in the hangars, keeping the fleet in perfect condition. The highlight: Light aerobatics over the alps at sunset in a T-28.
Here we covered the festival for the 2 week duration for RTL Televisions’ various news & magazine formats.
Left photo: Following Catherine Zeta-Jones as fast as possible through the canals of Venice.
Right photo: This was the evening red carpet for the film ‘Elizabethtown’. i.e. the girls were waiting for Orlando Bloom!
With RTLs’ reporter Carlo Schlender, I had a day to prepare and pack for the trip. I spent a week out there filming and editing for all of RTLs’ news programs and a half-hour special for Stern TV.
We were in Banda Aceh, the worst hit area and here in the photo we were in what was the harbour district which was completely destroyed. You saw the damage, but because of it’s vastness, it was hard to comprehend.
I am sure our whole team will remember what they experienced there for a long time to come.
